Perennial, up to 1 m high. Stem straight. Leaves lanceolate, lower alternate, upper whorled, attenuate, sometimes twisted cirriform at the top. Flowers white, bellshaped, 1.5-2 cm long, by 1-2 in the axils of the upper leaves, on long thin pedicels. Fruit red berry. Mountain forests of Central Asia
